Blog #2 Sept. 3- Sept. 10

Sex offender is free and reduced to a riverbed (Local)

This article was written in Saturday’s edition of the LA Times. The story is about a 44-year-old convicted rapist who has completed his term in both jail and a state mental hospital. Upon his release Ross Wollschlager, the convicted rapist, has been unable to find a permanent living situation. Hotels after learning of his identity will kick him out and a new state law titled “Jessica’s Law” does not allow him to live within a 2,000 foot radius of any school, park or beach.
The government is now forcing Wollschlager to live in a tent in a Ventura riverbed with a state funded security guard monitoring his actions. He is also forced to wear two ankle monitors which track alcohol consumption and his current location. What angers me about this story is that the government in a way feels bad for the convicted rapist because he has been forced to become homeless for the time being. In my opinion the lady who wrote the article writes with pity for his situation. Wollschlager was convited of two rapes when he was in 20’s and a third rape of a 10-year-old girl. What he has done in his past is undeniably inhumane and no matter how much improvement he has made in his life he should still not be allowed to lead a normal life. I even believe the government is wasting time and money on finding him a more ‘suitable’ living situation.
Towards the end of the article Wollschlager’s lawyer mentioned a resolution that I found to be a good idea. He said that upon there release the state should have a community and living situations built specifically for these rapists to live in. That way they can lead somewhat of a normal life yet be far away from any potential temptations that the real world may offer them.
